A.Y.S.O. BACKGROUND
AYSO, The American Youth Soccer Organization, is a nationwide non-profit organization, started over 40 years ago in 1964 with 125 players. Its national headquarters are in Torrance, California with 60 fulltime employees. There are approximately 250,000 dedicated volunteer coaches, referees and administrators for 750,000 players, ages 4½ through 18. There are 55 million children in that age group in the U.S., 12 million of which play soccer. Of that 12 million, 3 million play organized soccer and 750,000 play with AYSO. AYSO divides the U.S. into 14 sections: we are in Section 3 (42,000 players in New England, New York and New Jersey Bill Hummel is our Section Director). Each Section is divided into Areas: Section 3 has 8 Areas we are in Area L our area Director is Lyndsay Orr. Each Area is divided into Region: we are in Region 1517 which includes Town of Mamakating and Town of Thompson. Any children at live in or near these Towns are eligible to play in AYSO.
The AYSO Mission is to develop and deliver quality youth soccer programs which promote a fun, family environment based on the AYSO philosophies:
Everyone Plays - Our regions’ goal is for kids to play soccer so we mandate that every player on every team must play at least half of every game.
Balanced Teams - Each year we form new teams as evenly balanced as possible¾because it is fair and more fun when teams of equal ability play.
Open Registration - Our program is open to all children between 4½ and 18 years of age who want to register and play soccer. Interest and enthusiasm are the only criteria for playing.
Positive Coaching - Kids win when they are built up, not when they are torn down! We train and encourage our coaches to make the extra effort to understand and offer positive help to our players, rather than negative criticism.
Good Sportsmanship - We strive to create a positive environment based on mutual respect, rather than a win-at-all-costs attitude, and our program is designed to instill good sportsmanship in every facet of AYSO.
